History

Capsicum was a bush crop in Central and South America since 7500 BC and a cultivation crop in the last 2000 years. It was introduced to Europe by Cristopher Columbus; people called it pepper being hot.

Produced in South Africa.

Capsicums (genus) belong to the nightshade family.   They are called Bell Peppers, Capsicums, or Sweet Peppers in South Africa and are related to Chilly Pepper and Tomatoes.  Dried Bell Peppers, when powdered, it is called Paprika.

As the name indicates, Sweet Peppers or Capsicums are sweet and eaten raw or cooked.  Available in colours from Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red in increasing order of ripeness as well the level of nutrition, green tastes a bit bitter and red sweetest.

Nutrition and Health Benefits

Bell peppers are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.

They are primarily composed of carbs, 6 grams in one hundred grams of raw, ripe red fruit that are glucose and fructose.

Vitamins- the richest food source for Vitamin C.

It reduces the risk of chronic sicknesses

Helps improve eye health and lessen the risk of anaemia.

Me and Capsicum

While growing up in Kerala, India, Capsicums never featured in our local rural markets saw them for the first time in Africa.  In African cuisine, nutrition is taken care of by making food a display of colours through salads and relishes where bell peppers feature prominently.

It took time for me to get used to the salad items in the food spread.  Now, I improvise my tropical cuisines with African veggies and fruits, and bell peppers are a favourite.

Do you include bell peppers in your salad?

NB: This post is for C in the series of my A2Z posts lasting for the entire month and is part of the A2Z Blog chatter challenge.
