Sunitha Krishanan's fight against human trafficking

"The sense that thousands and millions of children and young people are being sexually violated and that there’s this huge silence about it around me angers me."
Sunitha Krishnan

I read about her from a friend's blog.  Sunitha Krishanan's unprecedented fight is against India's notorious human trafficking. The unfortunate victims who are sold across the world like cattle or things, every year, comes up to 2 million including children and women from the age of 10, she says. To rescue them she co-founded 'Prajwala' and anti-trafficking organization in Hyderabad in 1996.

Since then, it has been a shining hope, to thousands of India's sex victims -the raped, the physically and mentally abused and the HIV infected- who the majority wishes to be tucked away in to the gutters from being the nation's eye-sore.

For Sunitha, a victim herself, gang-raped by eight men at the age of 15, it is her life call.

Born in Palaghat, Kerala, educated in Banglore, Dr.Sunitha was awarded last week the V.Gangadharan Memorial Trust Price for the best charity organiser, by the Kerala government.  She is married to Rajesh Touchriver, an Indian filmmker, art director and script writer.

In her moving talk at the TED (see the above link) on human trafficking, she narrated an incident.  A friend of her, requested her to recruit a helper to take care of her sick mother, who in the next moment cautioned her that she should not be one among the victims, she had rescued.

She concluded her talk appealing to the Indian civic society, to accept the victims as their own and to show sympathy to them.
